• Temperature Requirements – Temperature requirements for the transportation of whales depend on the species of whale. For Example, the water temperature during the transportation of a Humpback Whale should be maintained between 60 to 80°F (15.5 to 26.5°C) and for the Beluga Whale it should be maintained between 35 to 50°F (2 to 10°C).

Also, the air temperature should be between 60 to 80°F (15.5 to 26.5°C), to prevent the whale from becoming too hot or too cold.

• Specialised Transport Vehicles – Specialised transport vehicles such as large trucks or trailers equipped with tanks or pools of water are required, depending upon the size of the whale. The transport vehicles must also ensure the whale’s safety and comfort and should have a proper air circulation and filtration system, water filtration and heating system, and adequate space for the whale to move around.
• Experienced handlers and veterinarians – A team of experienced handlers and veterinarians must be present during transport to keep a proper check on the whale’s condition and provide medical care whenever necessary.
• Compliance with regulations: Transporting whales must comply with all relevant regulations, such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which regulates the international trade in endangered species.
• Contingency Plans – There should be contingency plans to execute in case of any emergency in order to ensure the safety of the whale and the transport crew.

On 17th September 2022, the Indian PM announced the National Logistics Policy (NLP) to change the status quo and develop an efficient logistics ecosystem. 

What is the National Logistics Policy, 2022?

The Indian Government came out with the National Logistics Policy after working on it for almost three years. It aims to improve last-mile delivery, infrastructure, and connectivity. Following are some important features of the National Logistics Policy, 2022.

• NLP aims to reduce the cost of logistics from 14-18% of GDP to around 8% of GDP.
• It further aims to be among the top 10 in the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) by 2030. In 2018, India stood at 44^th rank in LPI.
• Its objective is to create data-driven Decision Support Systems (DSS) that will enable a more efficient logistics ecosystem.
• It focuses on reducing logistical issues and increasing exports.
• The 3 key building blocks :-

1. Digital Integration System – This system will integrate the data from the department of road transport, railways, customs, aviation, and commerce into a single platform.
2. Unified Logistics Interface Platform – It will consolidate all the digital services related to the transportation sector into a single portal.
3. Ease of Logistics Services – E-Logs will allow the industry associations to directly approach government agencies to resolve operational issues.

Importance of National Logistics Policy –

• The NLP will make the logistics sector resilient, efficient, and sustainable.
• It will increase the competitiveness of Indian goods in the foreign market.
• It seeks to build multimodal logistics parks.
• It will help reduce the carbon footprint of the supply chain by ensuring the usage of more energy-efficient fuels.
• The suitable infrastructure will attract foreign investors to our country thus increasing investments.

NLP is an excellent initiative of the Indian Government to boost India’s Logistics Sector. It will effectively reduce logistics costs, develop logistics infrastructure, and help in solving logistical challenges. But we have miles to travel. The lesser a freight mode involves carbon emission, the more eco-friendly it becomes. 

For example, Air Freight consumes 139 tons of CO2 in delivering cargo to Northern Europe from China and vice versa. About 77 tons of CO2 is consumed in providing the same but with a combination of sea and air freight. Far from this, Railway consumes only five tons of CO2, making it the most eco-friendly mode of cargo transportation. 

Conclusion –

Shipping via rail serves our purpose of saving fuel, protecting the environment, ensuring faster and more reliable delivery, and so on. But to make it a successful shipping mode, a country must invest in its railway infrastructure and continue to upgrade it. Transportation of the goods was necessary to move these items from the point of manufacture to the end of consumption. Here’s where Logistics enters the scene!

We have had economic relationships with various nations since ancient times. There is evidence that throughout the Indus Valley Civilization, India established trading ties with Bahrain, Oman, and other regions of West Asia. Trade was also thriving during the Vedic period (c. 1500–800 BCE), Mauryan period (c. 324–187 BCE), Kushana period (c. 30–375 CE), Gupta period (c. 3rd century CE–c. 543 CE), as well as under the rule of south Indian kingdoms like the Pallavas, Chalukyas, and Cholas. As technology developed, we transitioned from horses and old boats to spectacular aerial and maritime vehicles.

The words ‘logic’ and ‘statics’ are combined to form the Latin word logistics. According to the Council of Logistics Management, logistics is a supply chain process that “plans, implements, and controls the efficient, effective flow and storage of goods, services, and related information from the point of origin to the point of consumption to meet the needs of customers.” Let’s learn more about how it has changed over time.

EVOLUTION OF LOGISTICS DURING THE LAST CENTURY –

Before 1950, logistics services were used to support the military with food, supplies of equipment, and personnel. But firms only began to realize the value of it after the Second World War. By this point, the educational curricula did not include this sector. It was not developed and taught at universities until the 1960s.

1960s and 1970s –

At Michigan State University, the first course about this sector was launched in the 1960s. Additionally, Smykay was the first textbook to provide knowledge on logistics management.

Understanding ideas like physical distribution and inventory management strategy significantly expanded during the 1970s. The recognition of the coordination between inbound and outbound logistics was emphasized further.

The cost of supplying goods decreased with the cost of information technology due to more significant innovation.

1990s –

The world was using integrated logistics by the 1990s—the necessity to develop transportation so that the cost was significantly lowered increased as globalization grew. As a result, corporations developed solutions that included expanding its use on a scale that had never been done before. India also developed an LPG policy, integrating it into the global community.

Present time and Conclusion –

Logistics is expanding and contributing to the global economy’s coordination and faster growth. Even though this sector continues to face challenges related to scarce labor and shipping, issues with warehousing, rising freight costs, etc., especially in the wake of the Covid 19 Pandemic, we know that it is a promising sector that is intended to develop and produce favorable outcomes.

Technological development is intended to elevate this sector to a new level, and its future is even more exciting, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for us!
